Fort Meade History
Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1917, Fort George G. Meade was named in honor of Major General George G. Meade, whose triumphant victory at the Battle of Gettysburg became a major factor in turning the Civil War in favor of the North. Fort Meade was the training site for more than 400,000 soldiers during World War I, and used by more than 200 units with 3,500,000 men during World War II. Today Fort Meade is home to the First and Second Army Headquarters, processing active duty, reserve and National Guard units for a range of training exercises and duty missions.
Fort Meade Museum
The Fort Meade Museum offers visitors a chance to experience the rich history of Fort Meade through a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits. Indoor exhibits at the Fort Meade Museum include collections of historic artifacts, uniforms, war memorabilia, photographs, documents and paintings. Visitors can stroll the museum’s landscaped grounds and view exhibits of historic military equipment, including battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and a helicopter. The Fort Meade Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm; Sunday from 1pm to 4pm and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. www.ftmeade.army.mil/Museum/index.html

National Cryptologic Museum
Located adjacent to the NSA Headquarters at Fort Meade, the National Cryptologic Museum allows visitors a unique opportunity to peek into the secret world of codemaking and codebreaking. The museum is home to a collection of artifacts, cryptological machines and devices, codebooks, a library and a gift shop. Open Monday through Fri from 9am to 4pm.
